Oyo shines at National Sports Festival with 90 medals

Team Oyo has once again asserted its dominance in Nigerian sports, raking in an impressive total of 90 medals as at 25th May, from the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The state’s athletes clinched a combined total of 29 gold, 27 silver, and 34 bronze medals across various sporting categories including weightlifting, taekwondo, darts, powerlifting, athletics, cycling, kungfu, chess, and more.

Weightlifting proved to be a stronghold for Oyo with Lawal Rofiat and Taiwo Osijo leading the charge, each securing 3 gold medals. In the same vein, Taiwo Liadi lifted her way to 3 silver medals, while Ekah Rosemary secured 3 bronze medals.

In taekwondo, Oyo showed depth and diversity with multiple medalists such as Harun Usman, Harun Kudirat, Aliyu Ibrahim, Isa Ajide, and Eniola Ibrahim Aramide, among others, contributing to the medal haul.

The darts team delivered a remarkable performance with Adeyemi Saheed emerging as a star, winning multiple gold medals in the 301, 701, and 1001 men’s singles events. Williams Grace also made her mark, winning gold in doubles and adding bronze and silver in individual and mixed events.

Cycling, kungfu, swimming, and powerlifting events saw consistent podium finishes. Tofunmi Michelle Ibidapo showed strength and endurance in swimming, bagging two silvers in the 200M Butterfly and 1500M Freestyle. The cycling team earned medals in mixed relay, women’s team pursuit, and the 80KM road race.

Oyo also showed presence in chess, with top players like Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, Olisa Tennyson, and Akinseye Abiola bringing home gold. The state’s men’s chess team clinched gold, while the women’s team secured bronze.

In para-athletics and deaf-athletics, Oyo continued its all-inclusive sports development with commendable performances from Olasehinde Miracle, Clifford Orusa, and Edema Esther, among others.

Karate, kickboxing, wheelchair basketball, traditional Ayo, and cricket were not left out, with athletes bringing in both individual and team honors.
