A member of Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) and Nigeria’s number one lady golfer, Evelyn Oyome on Saturday won the 8th Seyi Makinde Women Support Pro-Invitational and Amateur Open Golf Championship played at IGC, Onireke, Ibadan.
Oyome finished with 79 gross over the two days and ascribed her victory to hard work and dedication to the game.
She lauded the organiser for organizing a befitting tournament to engage golfers across the country.
In his remarks, the sponsor of the tournament, Oyo State governor, Mr Seyi Makinde said they have given him the opportunity to develop sports in Oyo State saying “It’s an opportunity that unique, several people look for such opportunity and could never get it, you’ve given that to me, you did that in 2019 and you also did that this year, so I will continue to work towards sports development in Oyo State.
“I’m a governor for all sports and I can assure all sporting lovers total commitment to all sports in Oyo State,” he said.
Speaking, the Captain of the Club, Mr Tunji Oladosu said the 8th Seyi Makinde Woren Support Pro-Invitational & Amateur Open Golf Championship was a successful tournament while applauding the sponsor of the tournament, Governor Makinde for keying into the vision of the convener of this tournament.
He said the world today is passing through a silent evolutionary transition phase of the amazing transformation of women empowerment and participation crusades globally with various initiatives and programmes being organised in support of this movement.
“I hereby want to sincerely thank the Initiator of this tournament, Mrs Ronke Adepetu, for keying into this vision of promoting the crusade of women empowerment and at the same time helping the United Nations (UN) Women in achieving their set targets as mentioned earlier.
“I specially thank you for appreciating golf and using it as an avenue to round off and promote your vision and most importantly for choosing IGC as the happening platform. I also want to challenge you towards broadening the empowerment of women more in the golfing circle -empowering them in entirety by catching them young (through Junior or Young Golf Clinics) and supporting more Ladies Professional in future competition,” Oladosu said.
Also, initiator of the tournament, Adepetu said: “I am overwhelmed with joy because this tournament has come to stay in the Nigerian golfing calendar.
“I want to sincerely thank the sponsor, Governor Seyi Makindewho has kept his promise for the last eight years not minding the harsh economic situation in the country.”
