Paralympics 2020:Ejike, Olaitan win Bronze for Nigeria in Powerlifting

The duo of Lucy Ejike and Ibrahim Olaitan gave Team Nigeria a lot to cheer on Saturday when they both clinched Bronze medals in Powerlifting.

Ejike, who is the captain of Team Nigeria had only one legal lift which was her first, her subsequent lifts were disqualified. Her enthusiasm ensured a first lift of 130kg that edged out most of her opponents. The second and third attempts to lift 135kg failed.

Olaitan Ibrahim lifted 119k in 67kg to win bronze medal at the event held at Tokyo International Forum.

Speaking with Tribunesport after her medal presentation, the mother of one who was in tears of joy said she is happy to have won bronze though her target was silver medal.

“This is not my target,I have aimed at winning silver at least but to the glory if Almighty Allah,I picked bronze medal. I am happy because i am among who represents Nigeria and made her proud. I also have to thank the minister Sunday Dare for his support to us during the COVID 19 pandemic by providing us with funds to sustain and this singular step really helped us .Also,the fact that he believes in us really gave us the courage to excel at the games,” she said.

These bronze medals by Ejike and Olaitan have increased Nigeria’s medal haul at the Paralympic Games to three, a gold and two bronze medals.
