Pele backs Liverpool for glory as new EPL season gets underway

Brazil legend Pele has backed Liverpool to end their arduous wait to win the Premier League title this season.

Liverpool haven’t won the title since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, with their last success coming in 1990.

Pele is especially looking forward to watching some of Liverpool’s Brazilian stars, including goalkeeper Alisson, who joined from Roma for £65million and attacker Roberto Firmino.

Pele wrote on Twitter: ‘It’s the start of the @PremierLeague today. Who do you think will win? I think it’s the year of Liverpool, Alisson and Firmino!’.

A little surprisingly, Pele failed to mention another Brazilian on Liverpool’s books in midfielder Fabinho, who joined from Monaco for £44million and could prove to be a hugely important player for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

With Liverpool having been heavily active in the transfer market – they have also brought in Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri – many are tipping them to enjoy a successful season.

However, they will have to be at their very best to finish above Manchester City, who won the title in such scintillating style last season.

Manchester United may not have got as many signings as they wanted but will still be going for the title, while Chelsea and Arsenal will hope to be revitalised under the guidance of new managers Maurizio Sarri and Unai Emery respectively.

Tottenham, meanwhile, didn’t add to their squad this summer but still have a very strong starting lineup.

Despite the fierce competition that they face, Liverpool will be determined to be crowned champions this campaign. They get their season underway on Sunday with a home game against West Ham.
