Argentina-based striker, Jonathan Asuzu has described his invitation to the Nigerian U-20 national team as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
The 18-year-old River Plate forward was among the players called up by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
In a letter dated 8 August 2025, signed by NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sani Maikano, Asuzu was officially selected for the final phase of camping before the tournament.
Speaking in Abuja, the striker expressed gratitude to the NFF and the Federal Government for nurturing young talents through sport.
“The invitation to join the national team is not just an opportunity, it is a dream come true for me,” Asuzu said.
He added that wearing Nigeria’s green and white jersey was a symbol of pride and national honour.
However, Asuzu revealed that he could not join his teammates in camp due to an expired Nigerian passport.
Despite efforts to renew the document, the striker said the process could not be completed within FIFA’s stipulated timeframe.
“It is with sadness that I am unable to be with my teammates at this crucial stage,” he said. “But my heart remains with them, and I am rooting for their success.”
Asuzu urged fellow players to stay resilient and turn setbacks into opportunities, noting that challenges often shape true champions.
He described the U-20 World Cup as more than a tournament, calling it a platform for young footballers to showcase their skills and strengthen Nigeria’s football legacy.
The striker acknowledged the support of Dr Raymond Edoh, who played a pivotal role in facilitating his invitation, and praised his family for their sacrifices, particularly his father.
His father, Godwin Asuzu, also extended appreciation to the NFF and the government for giving his son the chance to represent the nation.
“I look forward to the day we can lift the trophy together and make Nigeria proud,” he said.
