Pogba makes captaincy claim

Paul Pogba insists he does not need to wear the captain’s armband in order to be a leader for France and Manchester United.

The 25-year-old highlighted his growing maturity over the summer as he helped rally France to World Cup victory with a series of inspirational team talks in the dressing room.

Hugo Lloris was the official captain for France as they secured the world title in Russia, however Pogba took it upon himself to lead when required.

Despite the impressive nature of his leadership qualities, Jose Mourinho confirmed last month that he had stripped Pogba of the ‘second captain’ role at United after the Frenchman claimed his club should ‘attack, attack, attack’ at Old Trafford, when they drew with Wolves.

However, the Portuguese later clarified Pogba was never the vice-captain at the club and revealed the position will remain vacant.

And while Pogba is yet to officially be named captain for club or country, the charismatic midfielder insists he does not need to wear the armband to be a leader.

“I’ve never played in the France team to be captain, being here is already a big thing for me,” he stated.

“You don’t have to be captain in order to speak, a leader is not someone who has the armband.

“As a leader you can talk on the pitch but I’ve seen leaders who didn’t necessarily talk.”

Pogba has captained United three times this season against Leicester, Brighton and Young Boys before he had the privilege revoked by Mourinho.
