Powerlifting federation begins preparation for competitions

Head coach of the Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation (NPPF), Feyisetan Are, on Monday said that training had started for athletes as part of buildup for international competitions.

Are told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the training was aimed at monitoring and maintaining athletes’ physique and fitness.

“The athletes are usually grouped according to their weights; I am very mindful of their weights,” he said.

The coach said that he made the training schedule convenient to be able to relate well with the athletes and guide them to achieve success.

He told NAN that intense training would reduce anxiety and lay a foundation for achieving success.

“I counsel my athletes and task them to set goals to improve on previous records because their success is an additional benefit to me.

“Athletes who are committed to training and heed to rules usually have impressive performances because they have got the right approach,” Are added.

He said that upcoming international championships included the 8th Fazza Open,  2017 Para Games scheduled for Dubai from February 28 to March 3, and 2017 Para-Powerlifting World Cup to take place from May 4 to May 7 in Eger, Hungary.

The coach also noted that the 2017 Championship will hold in Mexico City from September 29 to October 6.

He called for sponsorship from individuals and corporate bodies to facilitate athletes’ participation at the events.

According to Are, para-powerlifters have been good ambassadors of Nigeria, having won laurels at international games.

NAN reports that para-powerlifting is for athletes living with disabilities.

It is open to anyone with minimum level of disability – persons who can extend their arms within 20 degrees of full extension during a lift.

The sport has been competed for at the Summer Paralympics since 1984.
