Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United not out in Europe despite PSG defeat

Wes Brown fears Manchester United have blown their chances of progressing to the Champions League quarter-finals after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red Devils have been flying high ever since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as caretaker boss in December, guiding the team to ten wins and a draw from his first 11 games in charge.

But their bubble was burst by the French champions at Old Trafford, as goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe handed the visitors a huge advantage in their last-16 tie.

United have it all to do when they travel to Paris for the second-leg in a fortnight, where they will be without key midfielder Paul Pogba after his red card at Old Trafford.

And, asked if he believes the tie is already over, Brown told the Sports Breakfast: “Yeah.

“I think they would need to get an early goal, and then anything can happen.

“But PSG are very good at home, so it’s going to be very difficult.”

Two-time Champions League winner Brown believes Tuesday’s clash came too soon for Solskjaer’s rejuvenated side.

United were outclassed for most of the match, while Angel Di Maria – a player widely considered a flop at Old Trafford following his failed spell at the club – starred with both assists in a lively game for the Argentine.

And Brown admits they struggled to deliver the same quality they have shown in the Premier League against the Ligue 1 giants.

“I just think yesterday was just a bit too much,” said the former full-back.

“They’ve been playing so well and the occasion yesterday and the expectation just got to them a bit.

“Let’s remember, PSG have been building this team for a while now, they’ve been building this team to win the Champions League.

“We’re playing well and we’ve got ourselves back into the Premier League and we’re still in the FA Cup, but I just think this game came a bit too early for us.

“It was a big occasion where we couldn’t quite maintain the quality.”

Asked if he believes Solskjaer is still the right man for the full-time job, Brown added: “I certainly do. I don’t think anyone could have come in and done what he’s done.”
