Christian Pulisic says he wouldn’t be surprised if Reece James finishes the season as Chelsea’s top scorer.

The red-hot England right back made it five for the campaign so far in Tuesday night’s 4-0 rout of Juventus in the Champions League.

So he already has more goals than anyone else at Stamford Bridge, and when asked whether he can keep it up, team-mate Pulisic gave an emphatic answer.

The USA star said: “Honestly, the way he is playing right now and the way he strikes the ball, I wouldn’t be surprised!

“We’re all impressed. What he can do on the field is pretty special. He’s got so much ability, so many different ways to help the team. The sky is the limit for him.”

Romelu Lukaku will have something to say about topping the Chelsea goalscoring charts when he’s back from injury.

But for now James reigns supreme, with the Belgium star and Kai Havertz both one behind him now on four goals apiece in all competitions.

Pulisic, himself just back from injury, reckons boss Thomas Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 system has helped James get among the goals by allowing him to bomb forward.

He said: “That’s what great about our system – it allows him to attack a lot. He was really strong against Juventus and you could see how much he helped us in attack.”

Chelsea clinched their place in the knockout stages with the win and are now favourites to march into the last 16 as group winner.

Attention now turns to Manchester United this weekend – with Pulisic hoping to play a part after finally putting his injury woes behind him.

He started the season in the team but a bout of Covid and an injury on international duty have severely limited his minutes since.

Pulisic said: “I’m feeling really good. My body is feeling much better and I’m getting even better with more time on the pitch and starting to gain fitness.

“It was quite a tough injury to be honest to deal with. There were times when I thought I could come back but I was still dealing with too much pain. Now I’m in a much better place.”
