THE Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super Six playoffs begin today at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.
The playoffs will involve six teams from the two groups of clubs that featured in the just concluded abridged 2018/19 season of the NPFL.
The top three clubs from Group A – Rangers International FC of Enugu, Lobi Stars and Enyimba FC – will be joined in the Super Six by the top three teams from Group B – Akwa United, Kano Pillars and FC IfeanyiUbah – to contest for plaudits.
By the end of the playoffs, the champions of the NPFL season and Nigeria’s two representatives in the CAF Champions League in the 2019/2020 season would have emerged.
Another club will pick one of the tickets to represent Nigeria in the Confederation Cup. Winners of the FA Cup will bag the other ticket to fly Nigeria’s flag in CAF’s second tier club championship in the incoming season.

The NPFL management adopted the abridged league format this season following the default that attended the league last season whereby no club could be relegated while adjusting to meet up with CAF’s deadline for submission of names of clubs for the club championships against this season.
With the conclusion of the abridged league, eight clubs (four from each group) have been relegated to the Nigeria National League. Their demotion will make way for the four clubs to be promoted from the abridged league to return the NPFL to its original 20-club format.
To kick off the Super Six today, Rangers International FC will square up to Enyimba FC, while Kano Pillars will face Akwa United in the next match. The last match of the day will be between IfeanyiUbah and Lobi Stars.
