Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui says it feels good to be ‘home’ after being appointed by the club last month.
The 51-year-old was caught up in a media storm when he was sacked on the eve of Spain’s World Cup campaign after it was leaked that he would leave La Roja after the tournament.
Despite Real winning the Champions League in four of the last five years, Lopetegui’s experience of coaching youth teams and developing young players has seen him tipped to overhaul the squad.
The Basque spent the early part of his career at Real and says he feels confident he can carry out the task asked of him in familiar surroundings.

“It is special to return to Real Madrid, my home,” Lopetegui told the club’s official media streams. “This is the club where I learned everything, it is where I spent my youth and it is because of this club that I am the Coach I am now.
“This job brings with it a lot of responsibility but I am ready for the special challenge.”
