Roma defend decision to sell Alisson Becker to Liverpool

Roma have explained their rationale for agreeing to sell goalkeeper Alisson Becker to Liverpool – and have insisted that it does not show a lack of ambition.

The Brazilian international is all set to seal a £67m move to Anfield in the coming hours – a world-record fee for a player in his position – and, naturally, some Giallorossi fans are dismayed that that club are selling their number one keeper, even if the fee is an extremely high one.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, sporting director Monchi, in what was a press conference to unveil new signing Justin Kluivert, fielded several questions on the departing goalkeeper and gave the explanation that the ‘substantial’ fee was one that the club were prepared to accept:

Roma, who have already added the likes of Ante Coric, Javier Pastore, Ivan Marcano, Davide Santon, William Bianda and Bryan Cristante in what has been a very summer of transfer activity at the Olimpico, will now turn their attention to recruiting a new goalkeeper.

Reports have suggested that Monchi and manager Eusebio Di Francesco are looking at PSG’s Alphonse Areola, Leicester Kasper Schmeichel and Sweden’s World Cup goalkeeper Robin Olsen as they look to fill the void soon to be left by Alisson’s sale.
