Rooney set to overcome injury ahead of Arsenal clash

WAYNE ROONEY is expected to be fit to face Arsenal on Saturday.

The Manchester United forward was withdrawn from England duty with a knee injury and returned to Old Trafford earlier this week to undergo treatment.

It was feared he could miss the Gunners’ visit but Sky Sports report that he should be available.

The Sun alleged that the England captain was boozing heavily following the World Cup qualifying win over Scotland.

But interim manager Gareth Southgate insists Rooney was crocked.

“Wayne was injured,” Southgate said after last night’s 2-2 draw with Spain. “He picked up an injury on Friday, couldn’t train Sunday and that’s it.”

The news that Rooney should overcome his knee problem will be a relief to Jose Mourinho, who could be without a host of players against Arsenal.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season in United’s 3-1 win over Swansea last time out.

Mourinho will also be without defensive options Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling who have longer-term injuries.

There are also doubts over the fitness of Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw and Marouane Fellaini.
