Chelsea’s hierarchy are holding internal discussions over the future of Liam Rosenior following the club’s 3-0 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion, a result that has intensified pressure on the head coach.
Rosenior had received both public and private backing from senior figures last week, but no such support was expressed on Wednesday, according to reports.
Chelsea’s leadership gathered at the training ground while players were given a day off, with Rosenior’s position now part of wider discussions about the direction of the team.
The loss on the south coast marked a fifth successive league defeat without scoring, the club’s worst run in 114 years.
It has left Chelsea seventh in the table and five points off the top five, with Champions League qualification at risk.
Rosenior did little to shield his squad after the defeat, describing the display as both “indefensible” and “unacceptable”.
His comments followed a performance in which Chelsea struggled to impose themselves and again failed to convert possession into chances.
There are also signs of unease within the dressing room. Some players are said to be unconvinced by Rosenior’s approach, while others have raised concerns over selection decisions, including the rotation of goalkeepers and limited minutes for certain squad members.
Several players are also understood to be concerned about the financial impact of missing out on Champions League qualification, given the structure of their contracts. Others are frustrated by the gap between expectations at the club and current results.
Within the squad’s leadership group, sources suggest there has been limited input during team meetings, raising further questions about cohesion and direction at a critical stage of the season.
Despite the uncertainty, figures at the club have pointed to recent contract renewals for key players as a sign of longer-term planning. However, those agreements were completed before the current run of defeats.
Supporter frustration has largely been directed at the ownership, though chants against Rosenior emerged during the defeat at the Amex Stadium.
It was the first time he has been targeted directly by fans since taking charge earlier this year.
Chelsea now face Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, a match that could influence both their season and Rosenior’s future.
