Rumpus in NFF over Pinnick’s CAF ambition

A fresh crisis is imminent following the move by the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Amaju Pinnick to become a CAF executive member.

Africanfootball.com reports that Pinnick has submitted his nomination form for election into the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and is now set to come in direct confrontation with CAF president, Issa Hayatou.

Also, Pinnick’s candidature, according to AfricanFootball.com. has also been opposed by the technical committee chairman of the NFF, Barrister Chris Green.

Pinnick threw his hat in the ring to vie for a place in the CAF executive committee, which is against the advice of Hayatou.

Pinnick has never hidden his desire to be on either the CAF executive committees or FIFA Council, or both, but his bid to get into the FIFA Council in September was unsuccessful as Ghana’s Kwesi Nyatakyi was nominated and elected instead.

“Hayatou has told Pinnick he is still new in the system and there are many other more experienced FA presidents also angling to be on the executive committee,” a top official told AfricanFootball.com.

However, Green is not favourably disposed to Pinnick’s ambition according to a statement released by former Super Eagles press officer, Ben Alaiya.

“How come no member is aware, even as we know that some lilly-livered members will say otherwise. We must be careful not to put the cart before the horse,” Green was quoted as saying in Port Harcourt while speaking with journalists.

“When Alhaji Aminu Maigari wanted to contest, he was cleared by the federation, the Sports Ministry and the Federal Government, the same process was also applied when Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima wanted a seat in CAF, pronto for Dr Amos Adamu. Even when Chief Segun Odegbami and Dr Orji Uzor sought to contest FIFA seat they passed through similar processes, so nobody is permitted to jump the gun.

“We cannot let one of our best brains if not the best to go and serve CAF when we need him here back home to make our system better than we met it. Moreover, we are cruising now in the bid to be at the Russia 2018 World Cup and we must be united to avoid unnecessary distortion from outsiders,” the statement further stated.
