Russia 2018: Caballero set to be dropped for Argentina, Nigeria clash

Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero is set to be dropped for Argentina’s final World Cup group match after his shocking mistake against Croatia.

The 36-year-old shotstopper tried to clip the ball over the head of Ante Rebic to one of his own players, however completely fluffed his lines and played it straight to the Croatian player who finished wonderfully.

Argentina went on to lose the game 3-0 and now their chances of reaching the last 16 of the competition are hanging in the balance with just one draw from their first two games.

They must win their final game against Nigeria to get through to the knockout stages, and Caballero is set to get the cut.

The Blues keeper is likely to be replaced by the uncapped Franco Armani with manager Jorge Sampaoli ready to ring the changes after a turbulent time in Russia.

The Argentina boss has had to deal with a pretty rough week after the Croatia defeat, with rumours of a player coup and the reports that he is set to be sacked from his position.

After moving from Manchester City, Caballero made three Premier League appearances in replacing Thibaut Courtois, while starting five times in the FA Cup and four in the League Cup.

Having signed just a one year deal, Caballero is set to stick with the Blues for the 2018/19 campaign, however Eduardo has been released by the Blues and they will be looking for a third choice keeper.
