Jorge Sampaoli, Argentina coach
Argentina head coach Jorge Sampaoli said on Monday that his side’s upcoming World Cup match against Nigeria would be vital for Argentina.
The two-time tournament winners need to beat Nigeria in their final Group D match in St. Petersburg on Tuesday to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
“The match will be vital [for Argentina]. Both teams can advance [to the knockout stage]. They will try to do everything to advance. The defeat to Croatia was painful. But a few days have passed by. I have taken responsibility for that loss. From the very next day I have started to think about a victory over Nigeria. I am concentrated only on the next game,” Sampaoli told journalists.
Argentina, who finished as runners-up at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and reached the quarter-finals at the two previous tournaments, are on the verge of missing out on the knockout stage in Russia after picking up only one point in their two Group D games.
