Former Super Eagles winger, Emmanuel Amuneke, at the weekend dissected the Nigeria team and submitted that they still have a lot to do as the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia approaches.
Amuneke spoke on the fringe of the official LaLiga in Naija media held in Lagos on Sunday. The event was organised to showcase the activities of the Spanish football league in Nigeria.
“We [the Super Eagles] lack organisation,” the former Barcelona of Spain player said.
He added that Nigeria should forget the impressive run they had in Africa on the way to qualifying for the mundial, advising that they should focus on their strengths and weaknesses and those of their group opponents in the FIFA World Cup.
“Going to a war, you must you must know your enemy and you must know your strength. We shouldn’t dwell on our qualification in the African group. We did very well.
“But now we are going to the World Cup where we will compete with the best and for us to bring out something meaningful, it means we must be ready psychologically, tactically, physically, mentally and technically,” Amuneke said.
The former African Footballer of the Year also spoke about Nigeria’s group at the mundial, which in his opinion, “is a difficult group”.
Nigeria are drawn in Group D alongside Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.
Specifically Amuneke spoke about the Iceland team, underlying the spartan spirit of the Strákarnir okkar (Our Boys).
“I have heard a lot of people say a lot of things. I can tell you that, that group is a difficult group. When you look at Iceland, it is a team that don’t have have big names, but they are loyal to their style of play, they are loyal to their system. They will bring the fight to you. We must know all these teams,” he said.
Asked to give a word of advice to the team, Amuneke said the most important thing would be for the Super Eagles players to understand how their coach expects them to play at any point in time, adding that, “they must know that nothing is going to be easy.”
