Russia 2018: Eagles take up Rohr challenge

A couple of Nigerian internationals on Wednesday night beat the January transfer deadline to join new teams with the sole aim of claiming spot in Nigeria’s squad for Russia 2018 World Cup.

Nigeria’s German trainer, Gernot Rohr had late last year read the Riot Act that he was not willing to take along benchwarmers to the World Cup as many regulars of the Super Eagles were struggling to pin down starting shirts in their clubs in Europe.

Elderson Echiejile, widely criticised as Nigeria’sleftback, joined Belgian side, Cercle Brugge on a season-long loan from AS Monaco of France.

Also, Emmanuel Emenike teamed up with struggling LaLiga side, Las Palmas on loan from Greek club, Olympiacos.

Though, Emenike has long retired from the Super Eagles, a sterling performance with Las Palmas may convince Rohr to recall the player to the national team for the World Cup having campaigned with Nigeria at that level four years ago in Brazil.

Earlier, the duo of Brown Ideye and Isaac Success have joined Spanish side, Malaga after unsuccessful spells with Tianjin Teda of China and Watford in the English Premiership respectively.
