Organisers of the Nigeria Pitch Awards have commended Nigeria’s Super Eagles for their 2-0 victory over Iceland in a group D match at the ongoing World Cup in Russia.
“We congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians in the Diaspora. We commend the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Amaju Pinnick and the Super Eagles crew members who have worked tirelessly from the qualification stage to bring the team to Russia for the 2018 World Cup,” Shina Philips, initiator of the Nigeria Pitch awards said.
He also acknowledged the sterling performance of the two-goal hero and match winner, Ahmed Musa in the game against Iceland.
“We are proud of the general performance of the team, especially Ahmed Musa who won the 2014 Nigeria Pitch Awards Striker of the Year award. Since then, Musa has remained consistent in his performance both for country and club. He has now become Nigeria’s highest goal scorer in the World Cup with four goals and the only Nigerian player to score a brace in two World Cup appearances,” Philips noted.
Musa, who has since returned to Leicester City after a loan spell at CSKA Moscow at the just-ended season, scored in the 49th and 75th minute to ensure Nigeria’s first victory at Russia 2018 after a 0-2 loss in the opener against Croatia.
Meanwhile, Unmissable Incentives, organisers of the prestigious Nigerian Sports Award have also congratulated the Super Eagles on their victory over Iceland.
Speaking shortly after the match, Executive Director of Unmissable Initiatives, Mr Kayode Idowu, who is in Russia to cheer the Nigerian team, expressed delight at the performance of the Gernot Rohr-side.
He urged the Super Eagles to maintain the same winning spirit by going all out against Argentina on Tuesday, just as he expressed confidence in the ability of the team to make it to the knock out stage.
“I really appreciate the performance of the team today. It was a sweet victory. In fact, kudos should go to the team for improving on their last match and going on to beat Iceland. By and large, I think we need to remain focused and believe in our ability to succeed in this World Cup. I believe the team have what it takes to make the nation proud,” he said.
