Russia 2018: Pique, Isco to receive PETA award for saving injured bird

Spain duo Gerard Pique and Isco are to receive a PETA award for attending to an injured bird during the 1-0 win over Iran on Wednesday.

The bird landed on the pitch at the Kazan Stadium and play was temporarily halted. But in a wonderful gesture, Pique and Isco stepped in, gently picking up the animal and bringing it off the field of play to safety.

Fans in the stadium applauded the brilliant moment and the two La Roja players are being recognised for their efforts – with global animal rights organisation PETA sending two ‘Hero to Animals’ awards, complete with framed certifications, to Spain’s training camp in Russia for the quick-thinking pair.

“PETA is recognising these compassionate football players for gently coaxing this little bird out of a dangerous situation and on his or her way to safety,” said PETA Director Elisa Allen.

“No game is more important than someone’s life, and we hope their heroic actions will encourage everyone always to come to the aid of animals in need.”

Both Isco and Pique have an array of trophies and awards in their cabinet but this one should have a special place on the shelf.

Real Madrid star Isco was Spain’s Man of the Match as they narrowly overcame a spirited Iran side. Diego Costa’s fortuitous goal in the 54th minute was enough for Fernando Hierro’s side to pick up their first win of the competition in Russia.
