Russia-born Brian Idowu joins Nigeria squad ahead Argentina friendly

The Amkar Perm left-back has united with the Super Eagles and he is excited at the prospect of making his international bow against the Argentines.

Brian Idowu has expressed excitement after he joined up with the Nigeria team in Russia ahead of Tuesday’s friendly encounter against Argentina.

The St. Petersbur-born player was named on the standby list for the Super Eagles’ clashes against Algeria and Argentina. But injuries to some members of the squad member saw him called up.

Idowu, a left back plying his trade with Russian Premier League outfit Amkar Perm, will hope to make his debut in the friendly against the Albiceleste.

Revelling in his involvement with the three-time African champions, the 25-year-old via the team twitter handle said: “I’m happy to invited to the national team as part of the Super Eagles.

“I want to do my best, take this chance to play my best football and be with the squad for a long time to support the team and to help the team in any way I possibly can.

“This is a great opportunity for all the Nigerians out here [in Russia]. We qualified for the World Cup and we are preparing and hope we are going to bring joy and excitement all Nigerian fans,” he added.

The Ankar Perm player will give Gernot Rohr more options in the left-back position ahead of the World Cup with first choice Elderson Echiejile the only natural player in that position.

Ola Aina, predominantly a right-footer, filled in for the Sivasspor man – not invited due to injury – in Friday’s World Cup qualifiers draw against Algeria in Constantine.
