Scholes named Salford interim boss

Salford City co-owner Paul Scholes is taking caretaker charge of the League Two club after manager Graham Alexander was sacked.

Burnley favourite Alexander had led the Ammies to an unbeaten start in League Two and he has won 49 of his 109 matches in charge.

However, Salford have announced this afternoon that the 48-year-old has left his position, with part-owner Scholes placed in temporary charge. That is reportedly owing to Warren Joyce, the club’s development manager who would have otherwise stepped in, currently isolating.

Alexander played 178 times during a successful four year spell at Turf Moor, scoring 24 times, his career also taking in spells with Luton Town and Scunthorpe United and two with Preston North End.

His managerial career included two years and nine months with Fleetwood Town, two years with Scunthorpe before being appointed by the Ammies in the summer of 2018.

He won promotion via the National League play-offs in his first season, before leading them to a 10th placed finish last term. They also reached the Checkatrade Trophy final, where they were due to face Portsmouth, before the 2019/20 season was curtailed because of Covid-19.

So far this season, Salford are fifth in the table with nine points from their five matches, but did throw away a two-goal lead at the weekend to draw with Tranmere Rovers.

And that was to be his last match in charge, with Scholes set to be in the dug-out for the weekend trip to Port Vale.

A statement from the club read: “Salford City Football Club announces that manager Graham Alexander has left the club with immediate effect. The club met with Graham this morning and after discussion have agreed to part company.

“The club would like to wish him all the best and success in the future. Paul Scholes will act as the interim head coach while the club looks to secure a new manager.”
