Schweinsteiger joined on Man Utd bench by Mkhitaryan & Rooney

The German midfielder is included in the 18 for the first time this season, but Thursday’s Man of the Match fails to retain his starting place

Jose Mourinho has promoted Bastian Schweinsteiger to the Manchester United bench, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Wayne Rooney have been dropped from the starting XI for Sunday’s Premier League clash with West Ham United.

Schweinsteiger has barely so much as trained with the first team this season having been told by the manager that he was not in the club’s plans this term, however he has recently returned to the fold and is called into the matchday squad against Slaven Bilic’s side at Old Trafford.

Mkhitaryan is relegated back to the bench having earned the Man of the Match award in Thursday’s 4-0 victory over Feyenoord in what was only his second start for the club, while Rooney again finds himself among the substitutes having started the last two league fixtures against Swansea and Arsenal.

Elsewhere there are recalls for David de Gea, Marcos Rojo, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera and Matteo Darmian, while Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw do not make the 18.

Man Utd: De Gea; Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Darmian; Herrera, Pogba; Lingard, Mata, Rashford; Ibrahimovic. Subs: Romero, Rooney, Blind, Young, Mkhitaryan, Fellaini, Schweinsteiger.

West Ham: Randolph; Cresswell, Kouyate, Lanzini, Obiang, Sakho, Noble, Collins, Ogbonna, Payet, Antoniom. Subs: Adrian, Nordtveit, Feghouli, Zaza, Ayew, Fletcher, Fernandes.
