Serena Williams overtakes Roger Federer’s Grand Slam wins record

September 6, 2016

SERENA Williams carved out another slice of history last night when she overtook Roger Federer’s record of match wins at Grand Slams, Mirror Sport stated.
The World No 1 brushed aside Kazakhstan’s unseeded Yaroslava Schvedova 6-2, 6-3 to book a quarter final showdown with Simona Halep at the US Open.
The victory was her 308th at the four majors, breaking the record set by Federer, who is not competing at Flushing Meadows.
Williams said: “It’s really exciting. This is where it all started for me and it’s so magical to do it here.
“Hopefully Roger is going to keep playing and I know I am, so hopefully we can keep winning a few more.”
No 5 seed Halep is next in her line of sight but the Romanian is adopting a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude against Williams, who hasn’t dropped her serve in the tournament.
Halep, who beat Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 7-5, said: “I don’t think the mental challenge is that important because she’s the best player in the world. I don’t have to be afraid or to have emotions because I have nothing to lose.
“It’s just a huge challenge for me. I will be just playing my game.
“Physically I feel strong enough to face her, but you never know. She has a lot of power when she hits, so I have just to recover my body and give everything I have.”
