Embattled Brazilian football star Dani Alves will remain in prison after a Spanish court denied his appeal for bail while the investigation into a sexual assault accusation against him continues.
The court cited the risk of Alves fleeing as the reason for rejecting the bail appeal, and a trial has not been scheduled. Alves was detained in January after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her at a nightclub on December 30, 2022.
Alves has denied any wrongdoing and claimed the encounter was consensual.

In a statement, his defense team said, “Daniel Alves remains as innocent as he was before this ruling,” and they denied any intention to evade the legal process.
“His desire to leave Spain and elude the process did not, and does not, exist.”
Alves’ lawyers had offered to have him surrender his passport, wear a tracking device, and report to the court and authorities as frequently as required, but the court rejected the proposal.
