Shaqiri: Liverpool have a winning mentality

Xherdan Shaqiri says top-of-the-table Liverpool must adopt a tunnel-vision-like an approach to their Premier League title challenge.

Liverpool could see their lead at the top of the table reduced to two points by the time they take to the field at West Ham on Monday Night Football if Manchester City beat Arsenal on Super Sunday.

The Switzerland international knows what it takes to win championships having lifting three league titles with FC Basel before adding two Bundesliga crowns with Bayern Munich to his medal collection.

“I played in Germany and won titles there, so I have experience of it,” he told Liverpool’s official website.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was baffled by Kyle Walker’s midweek tweet which made light of Manchester City’s title rivals dropping points

“It has to be a winning mentality and the players need to be focused.

“The mentality is similar [here]. You need to go into games trying to win them and to give everything to do that. I am pretty sure with the talent we have in the team we can achieve a lot.

“Now we need to keep going this hard until the end. To work hard in training, to take the training into the games and to keep going. There is a long way to go, but we are in a very, very good way to be successful.”

Shaqiri moved to Liverpool from Stoke over the summer, joining Brazilian duo Alisson and Fabinho, and Guinea international Naby Keita as newcomers at Anfield ahead of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

Keita made a promising start to his Liverpool career before sustaining a few niggling injuries, affecting his ability to adapt to the rigours of life in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp.

The 23-year-old showed flashes of his talent in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester, and Klopp is prepared to be patient with the third-most expensive player in the club’s history.

“Yeah, happy so far but still a lot to come,” said Klopp.

“Naby is an outstanding player but he still has to improve; minutes, games, language, all that stuff.

“Everything will be fine, and it is fine so far, but we can really expect a lot more still, that’s how it is.”
