Manchester United are keen to sign Juventus star Douglas Costa in the summer, according to reports in Italy.

However, they could face stiff competition for the Brazilian winger as Italian media outlet Tuttosport claim rivals Manchester City are interested as well as Paris Saint-Germain.

They say Juve are hoping to trigger a bidding war in order to get more than £50million for a player who has been with the Serie A giants since signing from Bayern Munich in 2015.

Costa, 28, had been linked with a switch to Old Trafford while Jose Mourinho was manager and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to make additions after being named as Mourinho’s permanent successor earlier this week.

While the Norwegian has led United to an impressive 14 wins in his 19 games in charge, Express Sport understands the board will give him the green light to make several big signings in the summer.

Jadon Sancho and Declan Rice are understood to be high on his agenda and Solskjaer admits the club have need to be challenging for the Premier League title again next season having not won it since 2013.

“It is definitely part of my challenge,” he said. “To lift the Premier League trophy again is what we expect and what we are used to, and it’s what we have done so many times.

“We can’t wait for too many years but we have to take it step by step, it’s not like it’s going to happen overnight – catching 15 or 16 or 17 points or whatever we are behind the top teams now.

“But the Premier League is vital for us and we have been discussing how to move the club forward.”

Solskjaer insist he will only go into the market for the right sort of player and warned anybody showing complacency would be shown the exit door at Old Trafford.

“The players who get complacent, they never last at this club anyway,” he said.

“I’m the same. I can’t be complacent and rest, now I’ve got the job. That’s not me. We’re looking forward. We’ve got to work harder.

“I’ve got some targets. I want a Manchester United team that’s one of the hardest-working and fittest teams in the league.

“That then will bring results. The players know my expectations on the future.”

United have also been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann and they are also said to be keen on bringing in a new centre-back.

Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli was a target under Mourinho and it was previously claimed Solskjaer would be willing to break the world record transfer fee for a defender to get him.
