Rigobert Song: Photo of former Liverpool ace fighting for his life emerges as he wakes from two-day coma

Former Reds and West Ham defender is reportedly out of his coma after suffering a stroke on Sunday

A PHOTO of Rigobert Song fighting for his life has emerged as he wakes from his two-day coma.

The former Liverpool star, 40, is “breathing by himself” after suffering a stroke on Sunday.

Song, who also played for West Ham and is the uncle of former Arsenal, Hammers and Charlton midfielder Alex, 29, was rushed to hospital in Yaounde, Cameroon.

He was at his home in the Odza neighbourhood in Yaounde when he had his stroke.

Dr Louis Joss Bitang A Mafok, director of Yaounde Central Hospital’s emergency centre, said: “He has come out of his coma and the oxygen has been disconnected.

“His high blood pressure has returned to normal and the cerebral haemorrhage has been controlled.”

Song is expected to be flown to France on Tuesday to receive further treatment.

Dr Mafok added: “A medical aircraft will be in Cameroon in [Tuesday] the morning, we will have a working session with the French team and then he will be flown to France.”

Minister Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic reportedly visited Song at his bedside ahead of his transfer to France.

And Cameroon’s government are reportedly paying £78,000 for his treatment.

He can be seen clinging on to his life in a shocking hospital snap which has emerged.

Song captained Cameroon and won 137 caps for his nation during his 16-year career.

After three seasons in the Premier League at Liverpool and West Ham, the defender played for FC Koln, Lens, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor before hanging up his boots in 2010.

Samuel Eto’o led the the way in wishing his old team-mate well. He posted a picture of Song to Instagram with the caption: “I wish you a lot of courage and a speedy recovery big brother!”

Liverpool legends Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher followed suit.

Fowler said: “Thoughts with #RigobertSong and family… Hope he pulls through”

Carragher added: “Hope everything ends up ok for #rigobertsong”
