The Super Falcons of Nigeria defender, Michelle Alozie, has urged those criticizing England forward Lauren James for the stamping incident to give it a rest.
Tribune reports that Nigeria was defeated by England in the Round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand on penalty shoot-out after the match ended in a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.
James, who plays professional club football at Chelsea, was sent off in the 85th minute after stepping on Alozie in a seemingly deliberate manner.
The incident has continued to spark reactions on social media, with many criticizing the England forward for the foul. This criticism has led her to deactivate the comments section on her Instagram and Twitter accounts.
However, reacting to the incident in a Twitter post on Tuesday, Alozie said it’s time for people to take a break from criticizing James.
According to her, the incident was a result of overwhelming emotions and passion for the game, adding that she has total respect for the England forward.
She wrote, “Abeg, rest. We are playing on the world’s stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James.”
