The maiden edition of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Sports Festival in Ondo State concluded in Akure at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Sports Complex, with several young talents being discovered across various sporting events.
The sports festival, organised by the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), featured athletes from different zones of the state competing in football, athletics, table tennis, and other events.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General of GMT in Ondo State, Hon. Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, said the festival was aimed at discovering and developing young talents while engaging youths positively through sports.
He said the initiative aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s youth empowerment agenda and commended the sponsor of the festival, the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for supporting the programme.
According to him, the event also provided a platform to mobilise grassroots support for the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The festival ended with the presentation of trophies, medals and prizes to outstanding athletes and teams.
In the football event, Okitipupa Zone emerged champions, while Akoko Zone finished second and Akure Zone placed third. Temitope Bello from Akoko Zone emerged the winner in the men’s 100 metres race with Olumide Daniel of Ondo Zone and Saliu Toheeb of Akoko Zone, coming second and third respectively.
In the 400 metres race, Sunny Mumini of Akoko Zone won the 400 metres race, ahead of Wisdom James of Akure Zone and Owolabi Victor of Ondo Zone, while Nelson Joseph of Akoko Zone emerged winner in the combined 100 and 400 metres event, and Wisdom James of Akure Zone and Adeyeye Richard of Ondo Zone finished second and third.
Other events also produced winners, including Ayo Olopon Omosowon Idowu in his category. Akindele Metinukuro and Olowolafe Abiodun finished second and third.
In table tennis, Ilesanmi Olatunji of Akure Zone took first place, while Timothy and Fusho Abiodun placed second and third.
Also speaking, the Director-General of GMT in Ogun State, Hon. Tola Banjo, said the programme was not a campaign but an effort to showcase the achievements of the President.
A former Commissioner for Women Affairs in Ondo State, Deaconess Lola Fagbemi, said the event highlighted the President’s achievements and called for support for his administration.
Members of the GMT State Working Committee, leaders from the South-West, local government coordinators, members of the movement and former commissioners attended the event.
