Trabzonspor may retire Mikel from Eagles

John Mikel Obi playing days with the Super Eagles may not be over yet if the contract he signed with Trabzonspor of Turkey is anything to go by.

The Turkish side want the Super Eagles captain to play more matches with the Nigerian national team during the coming season as part of his agreement for a contract extension.

This is part of the provisos that were revealed after Mikel sealed a deal with the Turkish outfit, who also currently pay the wages of Nigerian compatriots, Eddy Ogenyi Onazi and Anthony Nwakaeme, who the Eagles’ veteran will join in the coming month.

Although there strong indications that Mikel could already be playing his last championship with the Eagles, as he has not been able to make 90 minutes of any match at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, he could be bracing for a spirited fight back, after signing a two-year contract with Trabzonspor, who have given him strong terms for an extension.

Mikel’s latest deal has an option to extend for a further year in the Lig club’s favour, which could mean a different scenario for him from what he ended with at Middlesbrough, where he captained the team for their last six matches but was released after his five-month contract with the English Championship club.

Trabzonspor have bowed to pressure from Ogenyi Onazi to give Mikel the opportunity of staying with them beyond just one season, only if he plays for Nigeria.
