Trouble for Barcelona as LaLiga cuts spending cap over Champions League exit

Spanish giants Barcelona has seen its spending cap cut by LaLiga for the current season due to the team’s elimination from the Champions League.

The new cap, set on Monday, February 20, 2023, is 648 million euros ($692 million), down from 656 million euros ($700 million).

Although Barcelona’s spending cap remained relatively high due to their financial restructuring, the club will still need to cut costs by about 200 million euros before next season. This can be achieved by reducing costs within the squad or attracting new investment.

Atletico Madrid and Sevilla also had their caps reduced due to their exits in the Champions League. Atletico’s cap was reduced to 315 million euros and Sevilla’s to 191 million euros.

Despite Barcelona being a five-time Champions League winner, they were eliminated in the group stage for the second consecutive season. Real Madrid, on the other hand, remained the club with the highest spending cap in the league, set at 683 million euros, unchanged from last season.

Sporting Tribune reports that each Spanish league club has a different salary cap, which is determined based on factors such as revenues, costs, and debts.

This cap is proportional to roughly 70% of a club’s revenues. Elche had the lowest cap in the league, set at 42 million euros.
