U-17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets fail to secure World Cup spot after Burkina Faso defeat

Nigeria’s Under 17 national team, the Golden Eaglets, have been eliminated from the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Under 17 tournament in Algeria.

In the quarterfinals of the competition, held at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Thursday, the Nigerian team suffered a 2-1 loss against their counterparts from Burkina Faso.

As a result of this outcome, Nigeria will not be able to secure a spot in the 2023 FIFA Under 17 World Cup, which is scheduled for November, as they failed to reach the semifinals of the AFCON.

During the match, Burkina Faso’s Aboubacar Camara took the lead for his team at the 45th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error made by Tochukwu Ogbiji.

Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Richard Odoh, attempted to block the ball from entering the net but lacked sufficient power, causing the ball to fall in the penalty area. Ogbiji’s indecisive attempt to clear the ball provided Camara with an opportunity to score.

Additionally, Ogbiji was deemed to have committed a foul against Lassina Traore in the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty awarded against Nduka Ugbade’s coached side in the 57th minute.

Camara successfully converted the penalty, further increasing his team’s goal tally.

Nigeria responded ten minutes later with a tap-in goal by Abubakar Abdullahi, narrowing the goal difference for the home team.

However, Abdullahi’s effort was insufficient to push the Golden Eaglets through, and the match concluded in favor of their opponents.

In the meantime, Morocco, Mali, Senegal, and Burkina Faso have all secured spots in this year’s World Cup.
