The Flying Eagles bounced back from their opening day defeat at the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations with an impressive 1-0 victory over the hosts Egypt in their second group game.
The game, played on Wednesday, was a must-win for the Nigerian side, who had started their campaign with a 1-0 loss to Senegal.
The Flying Eagles had history on their side, as they had won their second group game in previous competitions whenever they lost their opening game. Furthermore, Nigeria had a better head-to-head record, with three wins against Egypt’s two victories.

However, the young Pharaohs started the game on the front foot, creating a couple of half-chances in the early stages. Despite their dominance, Egypt failed to break down the Nigerian defense, and both teams went into the break with no goals scored.
The second half started in a similar fashion, with Egypt dictating play and almost taking the lead early on. However, it was Nigeria who broke the deadlock against the run of play in the 71st minute through Solomon Agbalaka’s powerful header from a corner kick.

The goal stunned the home crowd, and despite Egypt’s late pressure, Nigeria held on for a vital win that takes them to second place in their group behind Senegal.
The result means that Nigeria can secure their place in the quarter-finals with a win over Mozambique in their final group game on Saturday.
The Flying Eagles will be hoping to build on this victory and continue their quest for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title.
