UCL: Chelsea secure quarter-final spot with 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund

On Tuesday, Chelsea sealed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge, winning 2-1 on aggregate.

The game was a turnaround from the first leg, where Dortmund had the upper hand and dominated possession. However, Chelsea came out strong and focused in the second leg, with Graham Potter’s tactical adjustments proving to be effective.

Chelsea started the game with some near misses in the first half, with Kai Havertz hitting the woodwork just before the half-hour mark.

However, it was Raheem Sterling who broke the deadlock just before halftime, giving the hosts the lead they needed. The former Manchester City man got lucky with his shot, fluffing his first effort from Ben Chilwell’s cross back into his own path before slamming his second high into the roof of the net.

The second half started with Chelsea in control, and Marius Wolf was judged to have handled a Chilwell cross, giving Chelsea a penalty.

Havertz took the spot-kick but hit the post with his first attempt, before being given a second chance after a Dortmund player allegedly encroached. Havertz then scored after sending Alexander Meyer the wrong way, securing Chelsea’s victory.

Dortmund struggled to make an impact after losing Julian Brandt to injury early on, and Jude Bellingham missed an excellent opportunity to score for the visitors shortly after Havertz’s penalty. The Bundesliga side toiled in west London after losing their key player, and Chelsea capitalized on their disadvantage.

Chelsea’s win marked Dortmund’s first defeat since club competitions stopped prior to the World Cup, having won 10 in a row heading into this game.

It was also Chelsea’s second win in a week, as the team looks to improve their performance under Potter’s guidance. Although the visitors had some moments of brilliance, they were unable to make a comeback against a determined Chelsea side.

Overall, the victory was a testament to Potter’s tactical brilliance and Chelsea’s determination to succeed. The team played with focus and intensity, and their efforts paid off with a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Chelsea will now prepare to face either Liverpool or Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, hoping to continue their impressive run in the tournament.
