A United Kingdon-based philanthropist and founder of Dr Abbey Akinoshun Foundation (DAAF), Dr Abbey Akinoshun, has donated sports items and N500,000 to his alma mater, Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Akinoshun, who was the school’s sports prefect and the football team’s captain 41 years ago, said he decided to return to the school to impact the lives of the younger ones.
He said when the younger ones see people who were once like them in higher positions in life, then they are encouraged to further focus on their academics and also become successful in life.
On the donations, Akinoshun said a school in the UK noticed his philanthropic gestures and decided to give out the jerseys, while he then bought the footballs and inflater.
He added that he knew the students would also need other sports equipment like spikes for running, and gloves for the goalkeeper, among others and decided to donate the N500,000 to the school’s sports department to procure the needed items.
Akinoshun, who was also a 100 and 200 meters specialist while in school, said apart from the sports items donation, the foundation is also involved in several projects in the school which are aimed at making learning conducive for students.
He then charged the students to also focus on their studies which will go hand-in-hand with their sporting endeavours.
The principal of the school, Mr Babalola Nurudeen Lawal, commended Dr Akinoshun for contributing positively to his alma mater, just as he charged current students to also learn from the philanthropic gestures of Dr Akinoshun and other old students of the school.
Akinoshun was accompanied to the school by members of DAAF, some of who are ex-students of the school.
The Sports prefect, Taofeek Ibrahim, received the donations on behalf of the school.
