Phil Jones
Jones has been hit with a two-match ban for “insulting and directing abusive language” towards a doping control officer after being asked to give a sample for testing following the victory in Stockholm. As a result, the centre-back will miss United’s UEFA Super Cup tie against Real Madrid next week, as well as United’s first Champions League game of the new campaign. The England international was also fined €5,000.
‘Sky Sports’ reporrts that fellow defender Blind was reluctant to give a sample as he wanted to go and celebrate with his team-mates. The Dutchman was also fined €5,000.
United as a club have also been hit with a €10,000 fine, though they have a three-day window during which they can appeal the sanctions.
There is no suggestion at this point that either player was guilty of doping.
