Valencia 0-2 Atletico Madrid: Diego Simeone’s men secure victory despite failing to score 2 penalties

  • Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gamiero guide Atletico Madrid to victory
  • Diego Alves saved penalties from both Griezmann and midfielder Gabi
  • The result means Diego Simeone’s men sit top of La Liga with 15 points
  • Title rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to play on Sunday evening

Two penalty saves by Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves were not enough to stop Atletico Madrid in the Spanish League on Sunday.

Antoine Griezmann scored in the 63rd minute and Kevin Gameiro in injury time to give Atletico the win at Valencia despite Alves’ saves in each half.

The result provisionally moved Atletico top of the standings with 15 points from seven matches. Real Madrid, one point behind, host Eibar later on Sunday.

Barcelona, two points back and still without the injured Lionel Messi, are at Celta Vigo.

Alves stopped Griezmann’s penalty in the 44th, but the France forward was able to open the scoring with a left-footed shot from inside the area early in the second half.

Griezmann had already missed from the spot in the team’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday. He also missed in the Champions League final last season, when Atletico lost to Real Madrid.

The Brazilian goalkeeper also saved Gabi Fernandez’s penalty in the 69th, but Gameiro sealed victory for the visitors in injury time.

It was the fourth win in the last five league matches for Atletico, with the only setback being a 1-1 draw against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

Valencia, coming off two straight victories, remain near the relegation zone.
