van Persie may announce retirement this week

Robin van Persie will clarify his Feyenoord future this week with reports suggesting he could bring his career to an end.

The Dutch international returned for his second spell at De Kuip during the January transfer window and despite reaching the latter stages of his career, he has still managed to net five goals in 12 Eredivisie appearances.

The 34-year-old came on as a substitute during Feyenoord’s final match of the Eredivisie season against Heerenveen on Sunday and he is under contract with the Rotterdam club for next season, although there has been speculation that he is considering retirement.

Indeed, van Persie has previously remained coy when he has been asked about his future, although he has now confirmed that he will speak with Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst this week before he makes a decision.

“I played today and I am pleased we won,” Shaqiri said. “I will be meeting with Giovanni van Bronckhorst this week to discuss my future. I believe that by the end of next week there will be clarity regarding my future at Feyenoord.

“I am enjoying being with the young players and Feyenoord and being part of the squad. They are a great group of lads and it is something that I am enjoying every day.”
