Mikel Agu
Nigeria international midfielder, Mikel Agu is the latest player to be declared an injury doubt ahead of the Super Eagles’ final round clash with the Foxes of Algeria in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers this weekend.
The Turkish Super Lig club, Bursaspor player on a season-long loan from Portuguese giants, FC Porto faces a race to be fit in time also for the friendly against Argentina on November 14 after the dead rubber game in Constantine against Algeria on Saturday.
Agu, who made his international debut against Togo in a friendly this year was substituted 45 minutes into Bursaspor’s 2-2 draw with Kasimpasa last Saturday as he was still nursing an injury.
“Mikel felt some pains before the match against Kasimpasa, so the coach had to replace him after the first half,” a source is quoted by Allnigeriasoccer.com.
“His manager did not want him to worsen the injury. Bursaspor doctors have carried out tests on Mikel and they said the injury is not too serious.”
The news of Agu’s knock adds to a major headache for Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr, who is already without Victor Moses, Elderson Echiejile, Odion Ighalo and Moses Simon due to injuries. Leon Balogun is also reportedly short of match fitness.
Agu, it will be recalled, came on to replace Ogenyi Onazi during Nigeria’s last World Cup qualifier against Zambia in Uyo, where he bagged a yellow card barely five minutes on the pitch.
