WAFCON 2022: Falcons, Banyana test might

The Super Falcons will today face the South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the first game of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations match between Morocco and at Prince Heritier Modulay El Hassan, hoping to begin the tournament on a positive note and reminding the rest of the continent about the team’s quality.

With star forward, Asisat Oshoala, versatile midfielder, Rashidat Ajibade, and the experience of veterans Onome Ebi, Rita Chikwelu and others, the Nigerians hope to lay down the marker but South Africa walloped the Super Falcons 4-2 in front of home fans at the Aisha Buhari Cup with many players missing out of that tournament.
However, this is also a reminder to the level of devastation possessed by the South Africans.
At this year’s WAFCON, there’s a good blend of the old and known faces and the talented new entrants into the team.
Meanwhile, hosts Morocco got their campaign off to a winning start with a hardfought 1-0 win over a gallant Burkina Faso at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.
The Atlas Lionesses were made to sweat for their win in the tournament opener in Group A, but ultimately got the job done, with captain Ghizlane Chebbak’s goal in the 29th minute enough to give the hosts a narrow win.
Playing in front of a passionate and partisan home crowd, Morocco were comfortably the better team on the night and were full value for their win.
