WAFCON 2024: Ajibade wins MVP, Nnadozie takes Best Goalkeeper award

Nigeria capped off their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a haul of individual honours as Super Falcons players and officials dominated the end-of-tournament awards.

In a thrilling final in Rabat, the Nigerian side came from two goals down to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2, completing what has been dubbed “Mission X”, their pursuit of a record-extending 10th continental crown.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade led the charge and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Despite scoring only once, the winger’s influence throughout the campaign was evident. Her tireless energy, leadership, and three Woman of the Match performances proved pivotal in Nigeria’s successful run.

Between the posts, Chiamaka Nnadozie stood tall. The Brighton FC goalkeeper was awarded Best Goalkeeper after a stellar tournament. She kept clean sheets throughout the group stage and conceded only once before the final, a penalty against South Africa. The final was the first time she was beaten in open play, with two goals slipping past her, but her overall composure and saves were instrumental to Nigeria’s triumph.

While Nigeria claimed the trophy and several accolades, Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak emerged with the Golden Boot, scoring five goals, including one in the final. Her consistent threat in front of goal was a key reason the Atlas Lionesses reached the championship match.

South Africa, who were edged out by Nigeria in the semifinals, took home the Fair Play Award, recognized for their discipline and exemplary conduct throughout the competition.

Nigeria’s interim coach, Justin Madugu, was also honoured as Coach of the Tournament. He steered the team through a competitive field and answered critics with results, especially in the knockout rounds.

With this remarkable achievement, the Super Falcons further cement their legacy in African women’s football. The 2024 edition may have started slowly for them, but it ended in dramatic fashion, and with a full sweep of honours.
