WAFCON: Reps, Shaibu commend Falcons’ semi finals berth

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports and the Director General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, have congratulated the senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, for booking a semifinal ticket after a scintillating performance against their Zambian counterparts at the ongoing Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Falcons walloped the Zambian Ladies by five unanswered goals, netting three goals in the first half through Osinachi Ohale, Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo to put the game out of Zambia’s reach early.

The Coach Justin Madugu-led technical crew maintained control in the second half, with Tosin Demehin adding a fourth in the 68th minute before substitute Folashade Ijamilusi rounded off the rout with a stoppage-time goal in the 91st minute.

Commenting on the feat, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, expressed his delight and confidence in the team’s pursuit of their tenth continental title while assuring the team of massive support from all across the country.

“Securing a semifinal spot without conceding a single goal, while scoring nine so far, speaks volumes about the quality of this team. We are just two wins away from reclaiming the title we last won in 2018.

“The Federal Government, the National Assembly, the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, and indeed the entire 230 million Nigerians stand firmly behind the Super Falcons. We believe in their ability to restore Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football,” Honourable Amadu said.

The NIS DG, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ben Ogbemudia, said the girls’ show of strength and experience is a warning shot to the rest of the continent.

Shaibu commended the technical crew and the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as he tasked the team to remain focus ahead of the semi- final game.
