Gabriel Jesus has credited a reunion with Mikel Arteta as a key factor behind his decision to join Arsenal.

The 25-year-old striker has completed a reported £45 million (€52m) move to the Gunners from Manchester City on a contract until 2027. He takes over the No.9 jersey from Alexandre Lacazette, who has recently left the north London club to re-join French side Lyon on a free transfer.

Arsenal officially confirmed the transfer on Monday morning after reports broke out of a completed deal last week.
Three clubs, including Arsenal’s London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea, were reportedly interested in Jesus.

But the prospect of reuniting with Gunners manager Mikel Arteta, who worked with Jesus during his spell as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, proved a decisive factor for the Brazilian to join Arsenal, as well as the size of the club.

“We spoke a couple of times about the club, the players, the project, and the future,” he told the club’s website.

“I believe 100 percent in Mikel. I had a very good time with him before, he’s a very good guy and a very good coach as well.

“He helped me a lot [at Manchester City]. We would always stick together after the training sessions and do some finishing or something. He’s a very intelligent guy and was an amazing player, so if he knows something he can teach me or the young players.”

Jesus added: “I’m so happy to sign for this big club. From day one when I knew I could come to play for Arsenal, I was happy.

“I know the staff, I know some players, the Brazilian ones. I know there are a lot of top players. They are young and I’m still young as well, so I am so happy to be here to help. I come to help, to learn as well, and to try to do my best.”

Jesus is the fourth new signing Arsenal have made this summer after goalkeeper Matt Turner, winger Marquinhos, and midfielder Fabio Vieira.
