An initiative, Women’s Football Development Initiative (WFDI) has been launched on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
The initiative which was launched at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan was developed by the International Olympic Committee Young Leader for Nigeria, IOC Young Leaders .
Speaking with journalists, IOCYL, WFDI – lead, Grace Towobola explained that the initiative is aimed at creating opportunities and breaking barriers for girls and women in football .
She added that the initiative aimed to inspire ambition, nurture talent and cultivate a thriving community of female football athletes, coaches, decision makers and leaders.
Towobola who is the 2023-2026 , International Olympic Committee Young Leader , IOCYL, for Nigeria , further added that the initiative is also meant to empower girls and women to effectively navigate their journeys from childhood through adulthood by exploring multifaceted values of football.
She said “Today we mark a significant milestone in our unwavering commitment to creating opportunities and breaking barriers for girls and women in football and we are so excited for what the future holds
“Through structured training, mentorship and support, we aim to inspire ambition , nurture talent and cultivate a thriving community of female football athletes, coaches , decision makers and leaders “, she concluded
Also speaking at the event , the Oyo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke lauded the IOCYL for the initiative.
Adegoke noted that such initiative will help in improving female football community in the state.
She however stated that the Oyo state government is ready to give more support to female football in the state while declaring the state government support towards ensuring the success of the initiative.
Also speaking at the event, the Secretary, Oyo state Football Association , Kehinde Ojelowo stated that the initiative will place female football in a higher place.
While he however pledged to give more assistance to the initiative to ensure women succeed in football in the state and Nigeria in general .
