World Cup: Portugal have no ‘substitutes’ – Martinez

Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, says every member of his 26-man squad is ready to play a key role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting there are “no substitutes” in his team.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s final Group K match against Colombia, Martinez said every player is prepared to make an impact as the team targets top spot in the group.

“Our goal is to ensure that everyone is ready. We have reached a stage where we can make three substitutions at half-time while maintaining the same tactical and technical quality,” Martinez said, according to O Jogo.

“Those on the bench are also prepared to make an impact. The word substitute does not exist in our team. All 26 players are ready for training, which is crucial; we must fine-tune our tactical approach.”

Portugal opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo before responding with a 5-0 victory over tournament debutants Uzbekistan, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice.

The result strengthened Portugal’s chances of advancing, and a win over Colombia on June 28 will secure first place in Group K.

Martinez said the squad’s depth gives Portugal the flexibility to maintain its playing style regardless of personnel changes.

“The decision of who plays is based on keeping everyone ready to contribute whenever they are needed,” he said.

Portugal are regarded as one of the favourites for the expanded 48-team tournament, with experienced players and emerging talent throughout the squad.

Martinez will also be hoping Ronaldo continues his impressive form. The Portugal captain remains the only player to have scored in six different FIFA World Cup editions.
