World Cup qualifier: Eagles ’ll handle S/Africa, Cameroon one at a time — Rohr

NIGERIA are not losing sleep over the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifying fixtures against South Africa and Cameroon later this year, says Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles coach.

Rather, the Super Eagles will take each of the matches as they come, this is the submission of Rohr while speaking to BBC Sport.

Nigeria host African champions Cameroon in the last weekend of August in an African qualifier for the 2018 World Cup, but Eagles manager Rohr says too much thought will not be invested on that match for now.

“We are not thinking too far ahead of the World Cup games against Cameroon later in the year,” Rohr told BBC Sport.

“We have to take it one step at a time, first we focus on South Africa then we start to look at Cameroon,” Rohr added.

The three-time African champions will face Senegal and Burkina Faso in March and the Franco-German says that the results of the friendly matches to be played in London will come handy in preparing his team for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in June.

The Super Eagles will face the Teranga Lions on 23 March and the Stallions four days later as part of their build-up for the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in June.

“These two friendly matches in England will help us prepare for South Africa in June,” Rohr said. Nigeria, South Africa, Seychelles and Libya are contesting for their group’s sole ticket to the 2019 Nations Cup to be hosted by Cameroon.

The Super Eagles are currently tops of Group B of the African qualifiers for the Russia 2018 World Cup with six points from two matches, followed with two points by Cameroon who are targeting four points from the leaders from their two-legged matches between August and September this year.
