Former Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia has thrown his weight behind Ademola Lookman and Tolu Arokodare, insisting the duo could be the key to Nigeria’s World Cup fortunes as they battle South Africa in Bloemfontein today.
Siasia urged head coach Eric Chelle to build the team’s attacking strategy around Lookman’s precision at set-pieces and Arokodare’s physical presence in attack, noting that both players are in fine form.
He recalled how Arokodare’s late goal handed Nigeria a hard-fought 1–0 win over Rwanda in Uyo, keeping the Super Eagles within striking distance of the group leaders.
A win in Bloemfontein would cut the gap at the top of the group to just three points, making today’s clash a potential turning point in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

“We need to keep the ball, win free-kicks, and let Lookman work his magic. Arokodare can also be the difference with his hold-up play and ability to create chances,” Siasia said.
While acknowledging South Africa’s impressive form, which he described as their best in two decades, Siasia maintained that Nigeria’s historical dominance in the fixture gives the Super Eagles an edge. He, however, cautioned the team not to underestimate Bafana Bafana, stressing that only discipline and focus would secure the crucial win.
The Nigeria-South Africa rivalry has always produced drama and intensity, and with both sides chasing a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the stakes have rarely been higher. For Siasia, the outcome may just rest on the shoulders of Lookman and Arokodare.
He added that South Africa may be in their best form in over two decades, but they have always found Nigeria a difficult mountain to climb.
The ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers have seen intense competition across the groups, with Nigeria and South Africa placed in the same group. Both nations are traditional football powerhouses in Africa, and their matchups have always carried high stakes and passionate rivalry.
