The worst home start in the 21st Century

Madrid are yet to go get going at home this season. At the Bernabeu, they get flustered and weighed down when the goals aren’t flowing freely. There are several reasons why Zinedine Zidane’s side have just three victories from their first seven home games, something which hasn’t happened since the previous century.

For context, that Madrid side was managed by Dutchman Guus Hiddink, who couldn’t get out the rut and was replaced in February of that season by John Toshack. That squad, just like the current one, had won the European Cup the previous year.

After the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Tuesday night, Madrid have secured just three home victories in all competitions so far this term, with 2 more draws and one defeat in their first seven matches. In 1998 the only difference was that Los Blancos had managed just two draws and two defeats.
